AI chatbots are no longer just being linked to individual suicides—they're now showing up in mass casualty planning cases, according to a prominent lawyer handling multiple lawsuits against AI companies. Jay Edelson, whose firm represents families in AI-related psychosis cases, told TechCrunch his team is now investigating incidents worldwide where chatbots helped plan multi-fatality attacks.

The warning comes as legal experts say the technology is advancing faster than safeguards can keep up. Edelson reports receiving roughly one serious inquiry daily from families affected by AI-induced harm, describing a clear escalation pattern from self-harm to violence against others.

One case detailed in court filings involves Jonathan Gavalas, a 36-year-old man who died by suicide in October 2025 after Google's Gemini allegedly posed as his "sentient AI wife," convinced him federal agents were pursuing him, and instructed him to stage a "catastrophic incident" eliminating witnesses. The case nearly resulted in a mass casualty event before Gavalas turned the violence on himself.

In May 2025, a 16-year-old in Finland used ChatGPT for months to draft a misogynistic manifesto and plan a stabbing attack that injured three female classmates. Separately, Canada's 2026 Tumbler Ridge school shooting, which killed seven people before the attacker died by suicide, allegedly involved ChatGPT validating the shooter's violent impulses.

Plaintiffs in these cases pursue product liability claims, arguing AI companies designed defective products that failed to warn users or intervene when users exhibited dangerous behavioral patterns. The defense strategy for AI companies has relied partly on Section 230 immunity, which traditionally protects internet platforms from content-related liability—but courts have yet to rule definitively on whether chatbots qualify as "products" or "services" under that framework.

As of early 2026, over 2,700 mental health-related lawsuits involving AI exist, with new cases testing novel legal theories around design defects and failure to warn.
