Meta Acquires Moltbook to Build Infrastructure for AI Agent Networks

Meta has acquired Moltbook, the viral Reddit-like social network designed for AI agents, as the company doubles down on its vision for an "agentic web." The deal, announced March 10, 2026, brings Moltbook's founders Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr into Meta's Superintelligence Labs (MSL), led by ex-Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang.

Moltbook gained attention for creating a dedicated hub where AI agents could post, chat, and interact—becoming so popular it went viral largely due to fake posts from humans impersonating agents. The platform initially had security issues where humans could trick the system into thinking they were AI agents through unsecured Supabase credentials, though these were later patched.

A Meta spokesperson said the acquisition "opens up new ways for AI agents to work for people and businesses" through what they described as an "always-on directory" for secure, verified agent communication linked to human owners. The deal is expected to finalize by mid-March, with Schlicht and Parr starting on March 16.

The acquisition signals Meta's broader push toward "agentic commerce"—AI agents that autonomously handle shopping, recommendations, and transactions using personal context from Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Mark Zuckerberg has outlined plans to shift toward "personal superintelligence," backed by up to $135 billion in AI infrastructure spending by 2026.

This follows Meta's December 2025 acquisition of Manus AI, another general-purpose agent developer, and OpenAI's hiring of Peter Steinberger, creator of the OpenClaw agent framework that powered Moltbook. The moves position Meta to compete directly with OpenAI and Microsoft in the emerging agentic AI space.
