OpenAI has delayed the launch of ChatGPT's much-anticipated "adult mode" once again, marking the second postponement after missing a December 2025 target. The company announced the decision on March 6, 2026, with no new timeline provided for when verified adult users will gain access to erotica and other mature content.
What Adult Mode Would Entail
The feature, first announced by CEO Sam Altman in October 2025, would relax ChatGPT's current content moderation restrictions for users who verify they are adults. According to earlier statements from OpenAI, the mode would allow adult users to engage with erotica, flirtatious interactions, and frank discussions on sensitive topics—including medical questions and dark fiction—while still prohibiting illegal or harmful material.
The rollout was tied to improved age verification systems, which OpenAI began testing globally in January 2026. The company deployed an age prediction system that analyzes user behavior and language patterns to identify potential minors under 18, automatically restricting mature content for flagged accounts.
Why the Delay
An OpenAI spokesperson cited "work that currently holds greater importance for a larger user base" as the reason for the postponement. The company is prioritizing advancements in AI intelligence, personality enhancements, personalization features, and proactive user experiences over the adult content implementation.
"We remain committed to treating adults like adults," the spokesperson said, affirming the company's long-term plans to eventually offer the feature. However, the statement suggested that a reliable implementation requires more development time.
Impact on the NSFW AI Market
The continued delay opens the door for competing AI companion platforms to capture market share in the adult chatbot space. The global AI companion app market is projected to reach approximately $48.63 billion in revenue in 2026, growing at a CAGR of around 31%.
Leading NSFW AI platforms like Candy AI, DreamGF, and GirlfriendGPT continue to offer uncensored adult conversations, image generation, and voice synthesis—services that users have sought from ChatGPT's adult mode. These platforms report strong growth, with Candy AI leading rankings for its customizable NSFW interactions at prices ranging from $12.99–$14.99 per month.
The delay also raises questions about internal challenges at OpenAI. Reports indicate internal opposition to the feature, including a policy executive who reportedly opposed the adult mode and was terminated in January 2026.
