Meta flipped the switch on Muse Voice on November 5, giving every US user of its AI companion the ability to make real-time voice and video calls with a customizable animated avatar. The rollout transforms Muse from a text-and-task agent into a face-to-face companion product — a move that puts it in direct competition with dedicated AI girlfriend and boyfriend apps that have long offered voice calling but rarely with synchronized visual avatars.
What Muse Voice Actually Does
Users can now tap a phone icon in the top-right corner of the Muse app on iOS, Android, web, or Mac to start a voice or video call. The default avatar, nicknamed "Jolly," animates with lip movements, facial expressions, and gestures that match the tone of the conversation. Meta says two new models — Muse Realtime Avatar and Muse Realtime Voice — handle the synchronization between speech and visual output.
Users can customize the avatar's appearance to resemble a human, an animal, or upload their own image. The AI cannot see the user during the call — it only hears and responds to spoken input. Meta is embedding an invisible Meta Video Seal watermark into generated video chats for content provenance.
The feature was first previewed at Meta's Connect 2026 conference on September 23, and the company confirmed that support for its AI glasses and the forthcoming Muse Charm wearable device will follow.
What This Means for the Companion Market
Muse launched in September 2026 with strict NSFW blocks and no adult content toggle, positioning it as a general-purpose AI agent rather than an explicitly romantic companion. But the addition of real-time voice and expressive video calling pushes it squarely into companion territory. Users can now have extended, in-depth conversations with a character that reacts visually — a feature set that most dedicated AI girlfriend apps charge premium subscriptions for.
The key limitation remains the NSFW block. While apps like Candy.ai, Nastia, and others in AI Haven's top-traffic tools offer uncensored voice and roleplay, Muse's content guardrails mean the video chat experience stays firmly PG. For companion users looking for a free, high-quality voice and video experience without romantic content, Muse is now a viable option. For those wanting the full spectrum of companion features, the dedicated apps still hold the edge.
Rollout Scope and Next Steps
The initial rollout is limited to the United States. Meta has not announced a timeline for international expansion. The company also confirmed that Muse Voice will eventually reach its Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses and the Muse Charm, a Tamagotchi-like wearable designed to bring the AI agent into a physical form factor.
The November 5 launch follows a busy few weeks for Meta's AI companion efforts. On October 30, the company launched Waddle World, an AI virtual pet app with voice chat and journaling aimed at a younger demographic. On October 21, Meta paused Muse's conversation sharing feature after 6,800 chat URLs were found exposed in public DNS records.
