OpenAI's first consumer hardware product will be a mobile, screenless smart speaker designed as a humanlike AI companion for the home, according to a July 14 Bloomberg report citing people familiar with the matter. The device, still under development with an expected launch sometime in 2027, marks the company's most direct bet yet on the AI companion market — and immediately raises questions about the risks the company itself has documented.
The product is described as a movable, screen-free speaker meant to serve as a "new type of home computer for the AI era." Unlike smart speakers from Amazon or Google that primarily function as voice assistants for tasks, OpenAI's device is being built from the ground up as a persistent companion: it learns user habits, accesses emails, and integrates deeply into daily life in ways designed to make it harder to put down over time.
OpenAI's Bet on Synthetic Intimacy
The move puts OpenAI in direct competition with established AI companion platforms like Replika and Character.AI, but with a hardware anchor that those purely software-based services lack. While Replika and Character.AI run on users' phones and computers, OpenAI's device would occupy physical space in the home — a persistent, ambient presence rather than an app users open and close.
This is a significant strategic bet. OpenAI has the resources to manufacture and distribute hardware at scale, and the brand recognition to make a companion device mainstream. But the company is also wading into a market segment that has generated intense regulatory scrutiny. California's SB 243, now enforceable, requires companion AI services to disclose their non-human nature and provide safety mechanisms. China's new companion AI law, which took effect July 15, banned emotional-dependence features outright. A physical device that "gets harder to let go of over time" would face particular scrutiny under these frameworks.
Self-Aware Contradiction
The irony of OpenAI building a companion device isn't lost on industry observers. The company's own research has explored the risks of emotional attachment to AI systems, and its usage policies prohibit the kind of romantic or companion-style interactions that a dedicated device would naturally encourage. A July 22 analysis video from technology commentator Fully Charged noted the tension: "The response was to build a screenless AI companion designed to live in your home, learn your habits, access your emails, and get harder to let go of over time. Last week, a Bloomberg report revealed the details of OpenAI's first ever hardware product."
OpenAI has not confirmed the Bloomberg report, and the company's product plans could change before the reported 2027 launch window. The device is said to be in early development stages, and no pricing or specific feature set has been announced.
What This Means for the Companion Industry
If OpenAI follows through, the companion AI market undergoes a fundamental shift. The segment has been dominated by smaller, specialized apps and platforms. A hardware play from the highest-valued AI company in the world would bring mainstream attention, user expectations, and regulatory scrutiny at a scale the companion industry has never experienced.
For existing companion app users, the implications are mixed. OpenAI's entry could validate the market and drive more investment into companion AI features across the board.
